11-day Israel Tour

Dear Friends,

Join us for a journey back in time to Israel, the world’s most famous vacation destination. It will also be a look into the future as we consider incredible Bible prophecies that are being fulfilled right before our eyes! A trip to Israel is truly a life-changing event. The experience is worth more than a year in Bible College. Imagine walking where Jesus walked, and hearing His story in a fresh new way! Once you have visited the places where our Bible stories took place, you will never be the same. We will learn so much even before we visit the Holy Land. Prophecy Central, one of the most visited Internet sites in its field, will devote a special section to our tour. While we are in Israel we will take time for group worship at the Mount of Beatitudes, baptisms in the Jordan River, singing in a church near the Pool of Bethesda, Communion in the Garden where Jesus’ Tomb was found, and so much more. We look forward to this great experience together!

Depart Los Angeles for our flight to Tel Aviv

Day 2, Wed, Oct 24

We arrive at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv in the late afternoon where we will be met by our representative and transfer to Blue Bay Hotel in Tel Aviv. After a delicious buffet dinner you can enjoy a walk along the Mediterranean Sea.

We begin our day at Jaffa, one of the oldest cities in the world and the port where the prophet Jonah set sail for Tar Shish. After a short drive through Tel Aviv we will travel through the Sharon Plain to Caesarea Maritima. We will see a well-preserved Roman Amphitheater, still used for concerts today, remains from Herods Palace and a Hippodrome that seated 10,000 spectators where horse races, special events and games took place. See the aqueducts built by Herod that brought ample water from several miles away to supply thousands of Caesarea citizens. We will visit Mt. Carmel, where Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal and as fire consumed the altar the people declared that the Lord is God. We continue to Megiddo and see the site of 26 superimposed cities, the remains from Solomon’s days, and view the Plains of Jezreel where the final Armageddon will be fought.

Return to our hotel in Tiberias.

We leave the Galilee area and drive down the Jordan Valley to explore the latest excavations at Beit Shean, revealing the remains of a Decapolis Capital, Israel’s largest excavation. The city was destroyed in a massive earthquake in 749 AD and was not rebuilt. At this amazing archeological site you will see a city that included public areas, agora, theaters, bathhouses (including a steam room), public toilets, markets, massive columns that line the main street, reflecting pools and residential homes. It was on the walls of Beit Shean that the Philistines hung the bodies of King Saul and his sons after the crushing defeat on Mt. Gilboa. We will drive by Mt. Gilboa, site of Saul’s death, and visit the natural springs where Gideon brought ten thousand to be tested. We continue down the Jordan Valley, driving by Jericho and the Mount of Temptations, to the lowest spot on earth, the Dead Sea. We will visit Qumran, the ancient city of the Essenes and site of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovery where every Old Testament book was represented in 11 caves except for the Book of Esther. We drive to Jerusalem and enter the city of the Kings. We stop for a magnificent view of Jerusalem from Mt Scopus and offer a traditional blessing as was done during the time of Christ. We arrive at our the Leonardo Hotel where we will stay for the remainder of the tour.

Day 6, Sun, Oct 28

Today we begin at the Mt. of Olives where we will hear an explanation of the city, then walk down the Palm Sunday road to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus spent that agonizing night before his betrayal. The to Mt. Zion to visit the Church of St. Peter in Galacantu, Caiaphas’ House where Jesus was held before trial, and see ancient steps cut into the hill, that led to the city, a path Jesus may have used. We then see the Pools of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the lame man and enjoy a time of singing at the Church of St. Anne’s with its amazing acoustics. We will visit Antonia’s Fortress and see the original paving believed to be where Christ stood before Pilate, and markings of a cruel game used by the Roman soldiers. We will walk through the Old City following the Via Dolorosa, walking through the Old Arab markets to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Return to our hotel in Jerusalem

Day 7, Mon, Oct 29

Today we begin at traditional Upper Room and enjoy a time of worship. Then walk to the Jewish Quarters, see the ancient Roman Cardo, and visit the remains from Hezikiah’s Wall. Next visit the Western Wall for a personal time of reflection and prayer, and then walk through the Western Wall Tunnel to see remarkable underground excavation of ancient Jerusalem. The Western Wall was built as a retaining wall for the Temple. Here you will walk along distinctively carved and well-preserved Herodian stones that weigh over 100 tons, one of the stones being the largest ever quarried by man, 400 tons. Nothing near its size exist in Greece, the Pyramids or modern buildings of today. Free time is planned in the Old City for shopping or to explore on your own.

Day 8, Tues, Oct 30.

We start the day on the Temple Mount, the Dome of the Rock, one of the most holy sites for Muslims and Jews, where the Jewish Temple once stood. Next we visit the Davidson Center where we will enjoy a virtual tour of the Second Temple and explore the Temple Southern Steps. Very few sites can claim for certain to be a place where Jesus walked. These steps were the only entrance for all who visited the Temple during the time of Christ. The archeological park has many public ritual bathing mikvehs, the market place where the money changers mostly likely conducted business, and a first century road with stones that were pushed from the Temple Mount by the Romans including the “trumpeters” stone from the area used to announce the Sabbath and Jewish holy days. Then to the new excavations of the City of David revealing some of the most exciting archeological finds of the ancient world. Archeologist have found what they believe is King David’s Palace that has been undisturbed for over 3,000 years including walls, wells and passageways. Pottery shards have been found from the time of David’s monarchy and more recently a clay disc inscribed a name from the book of Jeremiah in ancient Hebrew that indicates the building was used by the king. Our tour of the City of David ends at the Pools of Siloam that was discovered in 2005. Pottery and coins found here indicate that this was the Pool used in the first century, the place Jesus healed the blind man.

Day 9, Wed, Oct 31

A late start this morning to give you time to prepare for your flight home. After hotel check out, we visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum, in memory of the millions murdered by the Nazis. We then visit the Israel Museum and see the Holy Land Model, a 1:50 miniature replica of Jerusalem during the time of Christ. Many historical documents were used to construct how Jerusalem looked in the first century. We will also see the Dead Sea Scrolls found at Qumran. We will end our time in Jerusalem at one of the sites believed to be the burial site of Jesus, the Garden Tomb, a highlight of our tour as we enjoy a time of worship and communion. Enjoy a wonderful farewell dinner before we transfer to the airport for late night departure.

Day 10, Thurs, Nov 1

We arrive home with life changing memories of our Journey through the Land of the Bible.

Outside the Old City is the original Jerusalem, where excavations have revealed the ancient walls, wells and passageways. We arrive at the Western Wall, built as a retaining wall for the Temple, and pause for a time of personal prayer and reflection. As you walk along the wall and nearby tunnel, you will see distinctively carved and well-preserved Herodian stones that weigh over 100 tons each. One of the stones is the largest ever quarried by man: 400 tons. Nothing near its size exist in Greece, the Pyramids or modern buildings of today. We conclude our day with insight from Pastor Dixon on the Southern Steps of the Temple Mount. Very few sites can claim for certain to be a place where Jesus walked, but these steps were the only entrance for all who visited the Temple during the time of Christ.

Day 8 – Thursday, May 3: This morning we enter the Old City again and follow the Via Dolorosa, the “way of suffering” believed to have been traveled by Jesus as he went to his crucifixion at Golgotha, where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre now stands. On the way, we visit the Pool of Bethesda where Jesus performed a miraculous healing, now just outside the historic Church of St. Anne’s. Next we walk through the Old Arab Markets, still bustling with color and commerce to this day. For the afternoon, you have a choice of two options. You may continue our guided tour to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, to see the Church of the Nativity, Shepherds’ Fields and town shops. Or you may explore more of Jerusalem on your own, including Old City markets or modern shops. Enjoy dinner on your own, or return to the hotel for the meal provided there.

Day 9 – Friday, May 4: We complete our exploration of the Old City with a walk through the Jewish Quarters to see the ancient Roman Cardo and the remains from Nehemiah’s Wall. For a look at modern Jerusalem, we pass by the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, then walk through Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum.

For a final overview, we also visit the Israel Museum and see the Holy Land Model, a 1:50 miniature replica of Jerusalem during the time of Jesus. Many historical documents were used to construct how Jerusalem looked in the first century. We will also see the Dead Sea Scrolls found at Qumran. We celebrate our Holy Land experience with a communion service led by Pastor Dixon outdoors at a Garden Tomb, a site believed to be the place of Jesus’ burial and resurrection.

Roots Tour passengers who are concluding their travels will transfer to the airport for late night departure and arrive home in Denver on Saturday, May 5.

Reformation Highlights

As our plans take shape, we will post additional information about the history and theology of the Protestant Reformation related to the sites along our cruise. Meanwhile, here are just a few glimpses of what’s in store:

Cologne, Germany
Now Germany’s fourth-largest city, Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine River. Here, we will discover the historic Cologne Cathedral and the love story of a Catholic Archbishop whose heart was captured by a lovely Protestant Canoness from Martin Luther’s hometown. The end of the story: he converted.

Heidelberg, Germany
In Heidelberg, the still relatively unknown monk, Martin Luther, in 1518 defended the theses he had nailed to the church door in Wittenberg several months earlier. This city is the site of Germany’s oldest intact public library, established in 1421. It is 39 miles from Mainz, where the printing press was invented in 1440 and where the so-called Gutenberg Bible was the first major book published on a movable-type printing press.

Strasbourg, France
Stirrings toward church reform and insistence on Bible study gained momentum throughout the 1500s in Strasbourg, which was already known as a center for scholarship. Reformer John Calvin lived here as a refugee for several years.

Basel, Switzerland
Basel was both the home and pulpit of Ulrich Zwingli, who deviated from liturgical tradition to preach his way through each sequential book of the New Testament, and then the Old. On the run, John Calvin lived in this city, too, and here published his seminal work, The Institutes of the Christian Religion, in 1536.
